TutorAI was created to provide AI support to students experiencing difficulties in the classroom and needing help to improve their study habits. TutorAI is an LLM-based application that aids in a user’s academic development. It can cover a wide range of subjects, from History to Physics. TutorAI offers comprehensive and interactive assistance while also giving the user transparency on the reasoning behind the AI’s responses. The base of TutorAI is using OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as it is familiar to students from K-12 to college level. We want students to have a tailored experience that includes interaction with their class materials, providing interactive quizzes and flashcards, summaries, and AI reasoning.

Students experiencing difficulties in the classroom need personalized and interactive support to improve their study habits and understanding of course material. Current educational tools often lack the ability to offer tailored, transparent, and engaging assistance across a wide range of subjects. Without such support, students struggle to stay motivated and effectively comprehend complex topics.

Using a prototyping tool called Balsamiq, my group and I created the first version of TutorAI to simulate our vision for the application. We started by designing the home screen and the various options available to students on this page. In this example, we simulated what it would be like for a student to create their own flashcards.

In this wireframe, we simulated the process of a student creating a study guide, both manually and with the assistance of AI. This allows students to experience the convenience and efficiency of AI-generated study materials alongside their own input.

The Solution

Solution:

The Study Guide feature in TutorAI provides a comprehensive and interactive approach to creating study materials. By allowing students to upload their course documents, select relevant topics, and utilize AI assistance, this feature ensures that students can generate personalized and effective study guides with ease.

Key Features:

  1. Integration with LMS: Allows students to link their courses and access uploaded files directly from their Learning Management Systems.

  2. Customizable Options: Students can choose from various formats and elements (e.g., images, bullet points, main concepts) to include in their study guides.

  3. AI Assistance: The AI helps generate study guides by analyzing the uploaded documents and selected topics, ensuring that the material is well-organized and comprehensive.

  4. Interactive Tools: Students can create flashcards and quizzes from their study guides to reinforce learning and improve retention.

  5. Accessibility and Navigation: Consistent interface elements such as the hamburger menu and AI chat bubbles ensure easy navigation and continuous interaction with the AI.

Solution:

The Flashcards feature in TutorAI provides an efficient and interactive solution for students to create and use flashcards. By leveraging AI, students can quickly generate customized flashcards from their course materials, enhancing their study experience and improving information retention.

Key Features:

  1. File Integration: Students can select from previously uploaded files or upload new files directly from their Learning Management Systems (LMS).

  2. Customization Options: Students can customize their flashcards by selecting the course, difficulty level, question type, and maximum number of questions.

  3. AI Assistance: The AI helps generate flashcards from the selected materials, ensuring that the questions are relevant and varied.

  4. Interactive Flashcards: Students can interact with the flashcards by flipping them to see answers, navigating through the flashcard set using arrows, and restarting or generating new sets as needed.

  5. User-Friendly Navigation: Consistent interface elements such as the hamburger menu and AI chat bubbles ensure easy navigation and continuous interaction with the AI.
